Lord of the rings route

Day 29
Queenstown, Glenorchy and Te Anau

The weather forecast for this day was terrible – heavy rain and chilly temperature. Guess what? It was a perfect sunny day, extremely warm and not a cloud! :-D

A day before, Kevin proposed us a route following lake Wakatipu and discovering surroundings, where there were couple of “Lord of the rings” places (Glenorchy, Paradise).

Same day we decided to go to Te Anau and spend night there in order to get to Milford Sound early morning on 27th, trying to avoid crowds of tourists arriving normally around 11-12 am.

On the way back from Milford sound the plan was to stope in Pukerau (Gore), spend a night with our Couchsurfing hosts, Robyn y Graeme, and on 28th head to Dunedin. The problem was we were 4 and not 2 anymore :-D Juli called Robyn trying to ask if there is any accommodation for the girls nearby her house, but she said: “No no, don’t even think about it, just come here all of you, I have enough space!” Ok then, spanish omelet and sangría is a must! :-D

Thanks to Kevins “magic card” we got a discount for Milford sound cruise (just 5%, but nice anywayJ and final price was 50 NZ dollars or 25 Euro for 1,5 cruize on a boat through the fiord.

The administrative stuff was finished and we finally left Queenstown. The plan was Queenstown – Glenorchy - Paradise and then leave to Te Anau.

On the way we met couple of shallow rivers, which we crossed with a car with no problem, just one of them seemed to be a bit more deep for the car. After couple of minutes doubting and thinking of turning back, Juli said – what the hell, I will try it – and bravely went through the river :-D

However, we had to cross it walking through the stream with a icy water, chilly!!

We had a picnic just besides the river, enjoying clean air and marvelous views around us :-D

The scenery was amazing, blue lake Wakatipu, white mountains, green grass and flowers, we were surrounded by Windons wallpapers the whole way – AMAZING!

After great day, we headed to Te Anau. From Queenstown there are 298 km to Milford Sound, and 178 to Te Anau, where we booked a backpacker to spend the night. 178 km were done in 1:40 hours with no difficulty.

We met the sunset at Te Anau lake, drinking wine and tying not to die from the cold and wind :-D

Backpackers was a basic place, we had reservation for 4 people and got a 6 places cabin just for us. Toilets and showers were outside, and you should think twice before going out due to the cold :-D

Next day we planned to leave at 6:45, since we were told it takes 2 hours to get to Milford Sound from Te Anau and our trip was booked for 9:15.
